- Building Resilience with Offshore Software Development Center
Building Resilience with Offshore Software Development Center Healthcare & Life Science Building Resilience with Offshore Software Development Center Home / Case Studies Anchor 1 Success Story The healthcare industry is shifting more and more to client-centric and innovative value-based treatments. With that shift comes the increased demand for refining efficiency and reducing costs while utilizing the latest software solutions to create value. Our client, a global leader in personalized healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and diagnostics, needed a team of savvy software development professionals to establish his Offshore Software Development Center in R&D and healthcare IT services. Working with Scalefocus helped them to minimize risk in the highly regulated environment of healthcare, improved their capabilities, accelerated time-to-market, and put them one step ahead of the fierce competition on the market. Enhanced operational effectiveness Reduced training and overhead costs Expanded R&D capabilities The Client Our client is one of the largest biotech companies globally, fighting diseases on many fronts like oncology, immunology, infectious diseases, ophthalmology, and diseases of the central nervous system. Focused on advancing science to improve the world's health and pioneer in pharmaceuticals and diagnostics, their global strategy aims to fit the proper treatment to each patient through technology. World leader in in vitro diagnostics, diabetes management, and tissue-based cancer diagnostics, the company aims to improve patient access to medical innovations worldwide. The Solution Three of four CEOs of healthcare companies see a decrease in rising costs as one of their critical financial priorities. Working with a partner with Remote Delivery Center capabilities has proven to keep organizations innovative and technologically advanced while saving resources to focus on their core business strategy. Like many other global companies, our client needed to rapidly increase its capacity to develop software solutions for the company's needs. Obsolete software, advancing competition, the need for stable R&D progress and easy scalability were the main challenges they wanted to address. Our client wanted to focus not only on cost-cutting but on improvements in Total cost of ownership, ROI, and value creation of software development. Working with a reliable and experienced technological partner like Scalefocus gave them access to a vast talent pool of software developers without the recruitment, training, and onboarding hassle. The Offshore Software Development Center that we established helped the client to shape a well-connected ecosystem of software products. The OSDC proved to be one of their most viable investments in terms of digital transformation. Our software development and R&D teams shared the responsibility for the software and product development, providing the client with enough time and resources to focus on their core business, to launch products faster, and to save the costs involved in staff hiring and infrastructure maintenance. Digital transformation through DevOps maturity DevOps has transformed the IT industry by changing the way teams operate and collaborate. By following the DevOps maturity model, we helped the client identify their organization's strengths and weaknesses and focus their efforts on critical areas that needed improvement. Our Offshore Software Development Center enrolled a significant transformation initiative – moving away from Microsoft's Team Foundation Server (TFS) to a next-generation development management system. The TFS was used as a centralized system to manage the whole software development cycle and the complete source code. But it was an outdated approach using a central repository, where distributed depository would have been more beneficial for the client's team – giving them the flexibility to work locally without relying on a central server. We conducted numerous interviews with the relevant stakeholders to determine the current "as is" IT environment and identified any gaps in the process. Our teams determined the pain points and offered a few sustainable solutions. Our client chose Azure DevOps Server as a viable solution, and we implemented it. The migration provided the client with full control of how and where data could be stored. As healthcare providers need to comply with rigorous data safety regulations – the information was stored on-premises. Our solution made sure the information was cloud-ready and could be easily transferred at any time. The RDC also helped the client to reach DevOps maturity. Following the SAFe methodology, we implemented DevOps to break down organizational silos and developed a Continuous Delivery Pipeline (CDP) – enabling our client's teams to deliver market-leading solutions at much greater speed. The result – highly agile teams able to deliver value whenever there is a business need. Accelerating productivity with modernized UI and UX Another important project that our OSDC delivered was the modernization of the UI/UX of newly acquired software, expanding the client's capabilities for Tissue Diagnostics (RTD) Advanced Staining. All of their software products follow the concept of One Company Design – the same look and feel across different applications. The software that we revamped is aimed to facilitate the work of laboratories and medical personnel. It enables them to understand the performance of various medical hardware devices through detailed, high-quality visualizations such as test progress updates and task completion levels. Our OSDC revamped the software and aligned it with the One Company Design requirements of the client. The challenge was to modernize the UI/UX while keeping the functionalities and build an intuitive experience for users with various technical competencies. The modernized UI/UX led to two times higher productivity rates among end-users Optimizing performance through R&D One of our clients' products enables medical personnel for early diagnosis of cancer through examination of cytosmears. The hardware takes samples automatically in 5 steps, but one of these steps still involves manual interactions. Our R&D team had to develop the necessary software that would automate this process. We were collaborating with the client's team and external teams responsible for developing the hardware. Our teams built several MVPs using different technological stacks. They consulted the client at every step of the process, advising them of the pros and cons of the suggested technologies and verifying and testing their productivity and performance. For the first time in the company's history, software and hardware will be developed simultaneously, thanks to the extended R&D capabilities that our RDC provided. Following our advice, the client also chose this to be their first hardware with embedded Linux. Results The Offshore Software Development Center enhanced our client's software development operations and turned into an instrument for growth that provided a greater degree of flexibility. It also improved collaboration and responsiveness across teams and the efficiency of the software development processes while maintaining the centralized decision-making required at the business level. Our experts helped the client reach DevOps maturity, replaced their legacy systems with a cloud-ready decentralized development environment, and streamlined the UI of the newly acquired software. We are now entering the next phase of the MVP development to automate their next-gen medical equipment, which will help for the early diagnosis of cancer. Key business benefits: Enhanced operational effectiveness Access to a large pool of talent as well as industry expertise New features and products have a shorter time to market. Reduced training and overhead costs Business flexibility enables the client to respond more quickly to market changes and capitalize on growth prospects. Complete redesign of the user-facing elements of the newly acquired legacy software Two times higher productivity rates among end-users of the revamped system Up-to-date development management system implementing the current SDLC A fully unified workflow allowing faster software delivery and deployment Expanded R&D capabilities Our Work We have a global client base that includes Fortune 500 companies, innovative startups and industry leaders in Information Technology, E-Commerce, Insurance, Healthcare, Finance and Energy & Utilities. - Achieving Two Times Higher Productivity with Fully Redesigned UI/UX
Achieving Two Times Higher Productivity with Fully Redesigned UI/UX Healthcare & Life Science Achieving Two Times Higher Productivity with Fully Redesigned UI/UX Home / Case Studies Anchor 1 Success Story Working with the client, a leader in personalized healthcare services, Scalefocus provided architecture, design and UI development expertise to rearchitect a newly acquired software system that expands support for legacy instruments for Tissue Diagnostics (RTD) Advanced Staining. We helped the company rise above the technology challenges of such acquisitions and revamped the client-facing side entirely in a way that is fully aligned with the client’s One Company Design policy. Our team ensured consistency and functionality that live up to the high standards our client holds for the systems they offer their users - medical practitioners, lab workers, researchers and patients. Rearchitected UI/UX enabling efficiency Double increase in user retention Improved business user productivity The Client Our client is a global HealthTech provider delivering personalized healthcare to patients through their joint Pharmaceuticals and Diagnostics divisions. For over 50 years, the company has been at the forefront of chronic disease research, utilizing technology and data science to fully transform patient care. Founded at the end of the nineteenth century, the organization is committed to creating innovative medicines and diagnostic tests that help millions of people across the world with targeted treatments. A leader in sustainability, our client currently employs around 90,000 people in more than 100 territories. The Solution Our client acquired a licensed software system that would extend support for legacy Tissue Diagnostics (RTD) Advanced Staining instruments that they were already using. The direct users of these systems are laboratories and medical workers who need complex high-quality visualization of the processes taking place within the different hardware devices they are operating - visualizations such as test progress updates and task completion levels, depending on the type of hardware the software system is attached to. This enhancement required the creation of new UI/UX content for the incorporated legacy instruments, as well as for the new planned features. Scalefocus was enlisted to work on the front-end and UI aspect of the project, our team being responsible for revamping the client-facing side without any aggressive changes that would interfere with the system’s core logic. The project’s complexity was rooted in the need to align the acquired software system’s UI/UX with the rest of the client’s systems according to their One Company Design philosophy. The main goals were to provide a level of visual and functional consistency and to make using the interface intuitive for medical personnel despite the varying degrees of their technical skills. Due to the monolithic UI of the acquired software system, we faced some difficulties in rearchitecting the underlying outdated technologies, but our IT experts rose up to the challenge and completely transformed the user experience into a smooth and intuitive one. Results Our team worked on the architecture, design and UI development alongside the client’s internal team to build the platform and integrate legacy instrumentation. We generated results in two-week sprints and incorporated feedback quickly, which gave us the flexibility to address the client’s changing requirements and interface preferences smoothly and at speed. Using the Scaled Agile Framework® (SAFe®) methodology allowed us to implement Agile, Lean, and DevOps practices at scale. It also allowed for increased collaboration and responsiveness across teams and made development processes efficient while maintaining the centralized decision-making necessary at the enterprise level. We leveraged WPF/XAML screen content for the Agile Development teams to consume as part of the design input for their feature work. The Scalefocus experts assisted the client successfully in bridging the gap in quality and functionality between the new software system they acquired and their larger systems pool. The healthcare company now benefits from: Full redesign of the user-facing elements of the newly acquired legacy software Two times higher productivity rates among end-users of the revamped system Impeccable user experience helping advance the company’s business goals Enterprise-wide streamlined operations across Tissue Diagnostics (RTD) Advanced Staining Significant reduction of the time to perform business-critical operations Modern look in-line with the One Company Design policy, boosting the client’s credibility Our Work We have a global client base that includes Fortune 500 companies, innovative startups and industry leaders in Information Technology, E-Commerce, Insurance, Healthcare, Finance and Energy & Utilities. - Next Level DevOps Maturity with Azure DevOps Server
Next Level DevOps Maturity with Azure DevOps Server Healthcare & Life Science Next Level DevOps Maturity with Azure DevOps Server Home / Case Studies Anchor 1 Success Story Our client, a leader in personalized healthcare, pharmaceuticals and diagnostics, needed а technology partner who would migrate their heavily customized Team Management Foundation Server (TFS) to a next generation development management system. Scalefocus identified the required functionalities of the future system and created a roadmap for improving the organization’s DevOps maturity. Our team performed the migration to Azure DevOps Server resulting in a fully unified workflow, ultra-secure storage of information and a future-ready approach to code and software development management. Full control over update rollouts Enacted DevOps best practices Created a fully unified workflow The Client Our client is a biotech company specializing in pharmaceuticals and diagnostics to solve today’s healthcare’s challenges through innovation and targeted therapy for patients. A pioneer in the industry, the client is a leading provider of in vitro diagnostics and treatments across different disease areas, including oncology, neuroscience, immunology, ophthalmology and infectious diseases. Since it was founded over a century ago, the company has helped millions of people across the globe and has been at the forefront of cancer treatment and research for the last 50 years. Our client’s focus is on improving patients’ lives through science that provides better medicines and diagnostics. The Solution Our client needed a technology partner to guide a major transformation initiative—moving away from Microsoft’s Team Foundation Server (TFS) to a next-generation development management system. The client needed the ability to allow their people, their hardware and their process to work together without compromising effectiveness. The outdated approach TFS offered in terms of managing code and software development used a central depository and the client felt their business needs would be better met with a system that uses a distributed depository. Scalefocus proposed a phased migration approach to achieving the business goals the client had set out. The initial stage focused on setting up the migration’s priorities by determining environment readiness and identifying current gaps. Our team conducted extensive interviews with stakeholders across the entire organization which were followed by the delivery of a roadmap for transitioning to the new system and maximizing its benefits long term. Once our team had concluded the best system to transition to was Azure DevOps Server, the client’s management team was fully onboard, and we then executed the strategy we had mapped out. Due to the handling of large volumes of confidential medical information and based on the client’s budgetary requirements, our team decided to proceed with Azure DevOps Server as opposed to Azure DevOps Services. This ‘closed network’ implementation offered a level of security unrivalled by Microsoft’s cloud-based Azure DevOps. Since the essence of the client’s business required certain information to be stored onsite, Azure DevOps Server was the best choice. The migration allows for full control of how and where data can be accessed. Whenever the client decides they need to take full advantage of Azure DevOps Services, the transition will be easy and seamless—our team made sure the information stored in Azure DevOps Server is cloud-ready and it can be transferred at any time. Results Scalefocus delivered a detailed TFS migration and a DevOps roadmap on time and on budget. The client, who is biotech pioneer, was missing business opportunities due to the lack of DevOps practices. To amend that, we recommend the necessary tooling and automated processes coordinated with the migration strategy set of recommendations. The new Azure DevOps Server system helps the client with the organization of the work process and code management, as well as with quick and automated software deployment. Scalefocus stepped in as a technology partner who knows the steps required, the pitfalls and the tools that best match the needs of the client who now takes full advantage of tall that an advanced development management system like Azure DevOps offers. Up-to-date development management system implementing the current SDLC A fully unified workflow allowing faster software delivery and deployment Eliminated the need to synch data: Azure DevOps Server as the single source of truth Next level DevOps maturity that was non-existent in the client’s entire infrastructure Ability to create, share and consume useful code in the form of packages Full control over update rollouts and unrivalled levels of security Recommended broader DevOps best practices and organizational structure Defined per-program and cross-program metrics and reporting Our Work We have a global client base that includes Fortune 500 companies, innovative startups and industry leaders in Information Technology, E-Commerce, Insurance, Healthcare, Finance and Energy & Utilities. - Remote Delivery Center for Global Leader in Quote-to-Cash Solutions
Remote Delivery Center for Global Leader in Quote-to-Cash Solutions Banking, Financial Services & Insurance Remote Delivery Center for Global Leader in Quote-to-Cash Solutions Home / Case Studies Anchor 1 Success Story A quickly growing market in Europe prompted our US-based client to pivot and expand its presence in the Old Continent. A Silicon Valley Salesforce innovator, its main workforce was based predominantly out of the US and India. To this end, Scalefocus stepped in as a nearshore development center and provided a team of experts ready to embrace the challenge. Our team delivered a low-code configurable solution that could be scaled up depending on the client’s needs. Shorter time-to-market Improved productivity Decrease in engineering costs The Client Our client is a global leader in the software as a service (SaaS) industry. The company offers a unique product portfolio that includes quote-to-cash and contract management solutions. More precisely, these are Configure-Price-Quote (CPQ), Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM), Document Generation, and Process Automation. These distinctive features add up to create a complete package that could transform any business and propel them into digitalization. Our client’s aim is to maintain and further develop its competitive edge in order to constantly achieve commercial excellence. The Solution Our client’s main challenge was to find ways to navigate through delivery roadblocks and to have reliable and scalable software solutions in order to meet the rising demand in Europe. For that reason, they needed to find a trusted nearshore partner who could readily take up the project and hit the ground running, offering prepared and skillful teams. After a brief training, we built out a Remote Delivery Center to service a variety of software development projects. We scaled their operations with four teams, each with specific technical know-how and expertise. More precisely, these teams were: developers, configuration engineers, solution architects, and a QA department. Having a strong presence and being actively involved across departments allowed us to track and control the whole software project cycle from start to finish. Our responsibilities included software implementation in which software engineers set up out-of-the-box functionalities. Developers worked over customizations. In order to successfully handle our client’s operations, our team was involved in the development of functionalities for the specific products: Configure-Price-Quote (CPQ) and Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM). CPQ is an automated sales tool that allows a business to handle and manage offers sent to clients. CPQ applications often work together with CLM applications. Seen as the next step of the cycle, CLM automates contract processes and streamlines them to a specific client, product, region etc. Working on a project in which the client entrusted us their software allowed us to expand our scope and take care of every detail along the development life cycle. More specifically, we were able to use a number of technologies like CPQ & CLM configuration, Apex customizations, Salesforce Lightning & Aura frameworks, Visualforce pages, Data integrations, Salesforce declarative development, Salesforce Administration, and more. A great amount of attention was given to the development of the CPQ product. Our team worked on the creation of Pricing Engine software that provides fast and accurate pricing to make sure margins and profits are optimized. The solution architect’s department was focused on the application architecture, and our QA experts performed complex tests to make sure there would be no issues throughout the process. In addition, our team devoted time and effort to enhance X-Author – an award-winning connector between Microsoft Excel and our client’s CLM or CPQ applications. That way, data could be automatically transferred from one software to another in a hassle-free and convenient manner. Thousands of records could be moved at any time, alleviating the workload from administrators, and also making the end user’s journey easier. In addition to this project, our team was also involved in software development, solution and technical architecture, configuration, and QA for a large Dutch manufacturer of technical equipment. For this second project, Bulgaria acted as one of the main delivery centers. We provided solutions for quoting, product configuration, pricing, ordering, and integrations. Additionally, among other developments, we improved the product record and the catalogue structure. Our team successfully handled the migration of one CRM, in this case Microsoft Dynamics, to another, Salesforce. Scalefocus was the preferred vendor for this migration based on our previous expertise and proved track record in delivering exceptionally smooth processes. Another important project for which our remote delivery center offered software solutions was for a leading Dutch online travel agency. Our Apttus/Conga certified team successfully implemented a Conga CLM solution, enhancing the platform's capabilities when handling user tasks. Last but not least, our RDC has also managed a project for a leading Nordic telecom provider. This was our client’s first project in Europe, and we started providing them with software development services since their very beginning. Results With our solid backing, the client received more than satisfactory results that allowed for quicker time-to-market, significantly improved productivity, and led to a considerable decrease in engineering costs. While the tasks were complex and challenging, a trusted RDC like Scalefocus came prepared and highly ambitious to drive growth and showcase a stellar performance. - Model Orchestration Platform for Improved Cross-Team Collaboration
Model Orchestration Platform for Improved Cross-Team Collaboration Energy & Utilities Model Orchestration Platform for Improved Cross-Team Collaboration Home / Case Studies Anchor 1 Success Story Our client faced multiple business challenges, with distributed teams operating in a disconnected digital and data environment, following suboptimal internal processes, and little or no cross-team resource interchangeability. Severe bottlenecks in developing crucial simulations, statistical, and machine learning models, led to increased resource management overhead and longer time-to-market. We rolled out a solution that turned into a centralized platform for all teams, offering them model orchestration, management, monitoring, and ease of deployment in a consistent way. The Model Orchestration platform provided a standard set of tools that are reusable, scalable, and fault-tolerant. Its implementation improved productivity, collaboration and enabled faster iteration of ideas to production. 80% Reduction of Model Crashes 40% Quicker Diagnosis of Root-Causes 24% Decrease in Model Execution Times The Client An international energy company that operates numerous power plants and leverages advanced technologies and innovations to manage large-scale power systems and infrastructure. The company sources oil, natural gas, and global commodities and trades electricity, emissions certificates, natural gas, LNG, and coal. They operate a sophisticated ecosystem of power plants and manage their own power infrastructure business. The Solution In order to modernize and harmonize our client’s modelling setup, we took a two-pronged approach. First, we consulted and advised their internal teams on best practices for software development and governance. As a second step, we designed and implemented a modelling platform, which would be used across different departments, serving various use cases, each with its own technical and functional requirements. I. Process consultancy We began by performing a detailed analysis of our client’s needs and workflows when developing, orchestrating and collaborating on different models. We proceeded to create a comprehensive gap analysis, which outlined our findings and suggested improvements. We implemented several CI/CD pipelines following industry standards and best practices, which allowed the in-house engineers to collaborate in model creation and efficiently utilize the Modelling Platform’s capabilities. As a result we: Harmonized the technological stack and tools used by teams across departments; Implemented a proper Gitflow for version control; Set up centralized Azure DevOps pipelines for building, testing and dockerizing models; Set up a central Container Registry for image distribution. II. Modelling platform To enhance the cross-team collaboration, we implemented a central modelling platform to be used as an orchestration, execution, and monitoring tool, tailored to satisfy all current use cases. The platform is based on Azure technologies and allows for the deployment, orchestration, monitoring, and debugging of various models with different technical and functional requirements. It is designed with extensibility in mind, so it can be easily adapted whenever new requirements and use cases surface in the future. Results As a result, our client’s internal collaboration was significantly improved, inter-department projects were vastly facilitated and overall model quality was enhanced. Unlocked business value: 80% reduction of model crashes. Improved model stability & IT infrastructure; 40% quicker diagnosis of root-causes; 24% decrease in average model execution times; Faster Time-to-Market. - Faster Early Cancer Diagnostics through Hardware Automation
Faster Early Cancer Diagnostics through Hardware Automation Healthcare & Life Science Faster Early Cancer Diagnostics through Hardware Automation Home / Case Studies Anchor 1 Success Story Curing cancer is undoubtedly one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century. New approaches are slowly getting us closer to a future where cancer can become a curable disease, and at Scalefocus we are proud to do our part in this battle. We helped our client, a global biotech company, develop and implement innovative technology solutions and automate their breast cancer diagnostics workflow. This process leads to a proper treatment of affected patients as early as possible and eventually will help reduce women's mortality rate worldwide. Increased productivity with custom made hardware and software Automated cancer diagnostics machine workflow Reduced cost and time for product development The Client Our client is one of the largest biotech companies globally, fighting diseases on many fronts like oncology, immunology, infectious diseases, ophthalmology, and diseases of the central nervous system. The Solution One of our client’s products allows for early diagnosis of breast cancer through tissue diagnostics. As part of the existing process, our client processed samples in 5 steps, one of which still involved manual interaction. This was not ideal as manual methods for sample processing can be time-consuming and can impact decision-making time to determine patient therapy, increasing the chances for inconsistent results and human error. To remove the manual steps from the process, our client needed an experienced adviser to consult them on the necessary hardware platform to be used and then implement the whole software architecture based on the chosen hardware. The initial hardware used to automate this step in the workflow had the size of a big fridge, while our client wanted it reduced to the size of a personal computer. What were the requirements for the hardware? In the current workflow for tissue diagnosis, this machine stands in between the automated processes for breast cancer diagnosis. The only manual steps left were the ones where the sample is applied on a glass microscope slide. The patient's cells are collected and suspended in a fixative in vial. The needed hardware had to be able to automatically open the sample cap, filter the cells out and then apply the proper pressure to stamp them in a monolayer on a microscope slide, dry it and send it for staining and analysis. We collaborated with the client's team and external teams responsible for developing the hardware. Our teams built several MVPs using different technological stacks. They consulted the client at every step of the process, advising them of the pros and cons of the suggested technologies and verifying and testing their productivity and performance. We suggested the latest generation single-board computer as the base of the hardware platform, best suited for the problem we were trying to solve. Scalefocus developed and implemented the whole software architecture that navigates the machine based on the suggested and approved hardware. Throughout the initial phase, we used various tech stacks to achieve optimal results. Initially, development started on QT, but later we advised our client that .NET would be better suited, as most of their applications were already developed on .NET. This allowed for reusability of a lot of components that were already developed, saving significant time and resources. The deep and various expertise of the Scalefocus team members was essential for the success of the project. Our engineers with rich experience in IoT and electronics consulted the client on choosing the right hardware platform. Our cybersecurity experts helped harden the platform's security while our software developers built the whole front and back-end for the tailored solution. For the first time in the company's history, software and hardware were developed simultaneously, thanks to the extended R&D capabilities that Scalefocus provided. We convinced the client to use the right combination of an embedded platform with embedded Linux. That was a significant change for a company using mainly .NET and machines running on Windows. The outsourced development center significantly improved the cooperation between our client's R&D teams and and helped to ensure better efficiency of the development processes. Results Through this project, the Scalefocus team had the opportunity to make a direct contribution to the fight against cancer – a socially significant problem that affects a vast number of patients around the world every year. In the process of software development, our colleagues worked side by side with the client's team and external vendors. This presented an excellent opportunity for knowledge sharing and exchange of experience directly with the client. The introduced innovation makes the whole research process more consistent and allows users to focus on more substantial work, while machines and software automate the repetitive steps. The project is now in its semi-automation phase. After its completion, it is expected to bring significant time savings. When it comes to health and life, time is of the essence Business benefits: Automated machine workflow for cancer diagnostics Reduced cost and time for product development Increased productivity with custom hardware and software Our Work We have a global client base that includes Fortune 500 companies, innovative startups and industry leaders in Information Technology, E-Commerce, Insurance, Healthcare, Finance and Energy & Utilities.
