  • Registrations for the New Season of the Scalefocus Academy Are Open

Scalefocus Academy launches a new course on Go – fully free and online Without any doubt the software industry has turned into one of the fastest growing and prosperous fields in which a person can start their career. With more and more companies opening offices in Bulgaria, there is abundance of opportunities for work on challenging projects. However, these trends have also been accompanied by an increase in the lack of qualified specialists in different technological fields. To address this market gap, Scalefocus opened its software academy back in 2019. The courses are completely free and are held online. Within 90 days, all participants have the opportunity to upgrade their theoretical knowledge from the university and to gain practical experience by working on real client projects. Since the foundation of the Scalefocus Academy, over 140 students have successfully graduated from it, with over 50 of them starting their first IT job in the company. The fifth edition of the Scalefocus Academy focuses on the programming language Go, which has been gradually gaining popularity in the recent years. It is suitable for people with a previous experience in C, C++ и PHP, as well as for anyone who wants to learn to code more quickly. Go is primarily used for backend applications and is among the most productive programming languages. Today, it has one of the most dynamic technology communities in the world. In the forthcoming season of the Academy the students will be guided by Preslav Rachev – a tutor, a software engineer and an entrepreneur who is passionate about knowledge-building and knowledge-sharing. Preslav has built his technical expertise in many different fields, but has found three particular stacks that he tends to stick to. One of them is Go for backend development, which allows him to prototype ideas quickly and easily scale to production-grade services. All students who graduate successfully from the Go course, will have the chance to start their career with Scalefocus – without the need to relocate, thanks to the flexible Work from Everywhere model adopted by the company. They will have the opportunity to work on challenging projects for global enterprises as well as for innovative disruptive start-ups. The application process for the next season of the Scalefocus Academy is fully online. The registration platform is open until December 17, and the admissions exam will be held on December 20. Only 90 days later the young specialists will have the opportunity to start their IT career. Apply here today: https://scalefocus.academy

  • The beginning of Tech Savvy Talks vol 1. Monolith decomposition patterns

Tech Savvy Talks is a new online series of events organized by Scalefocus bi-weekly, covering various technology topics. Through the events, our colleagues from the Technology teams discuss hot trends and best practices and share knowledge and insights from their expertise. Besides diving into the depths of various tech-related themes, the Tech Savvy Talks also include live interactive Q&A sessions with the audience. The events are free and open to anyone interested. They are entirely online and you can register on the Eventbrite platform. Follow the Scalefocus's profile and be the first to know about the upcoming topics and events. The launch event was held on Oct 6, 2021 by Vasil Kostadinov, a Senior Software Engineer at Scalefocus with over 6 years of experience in fintech, e-commerce and insurance projects. His contribution to those projects is on the back end, and the primary language he uses is Java. During the talk, Vasil presented the Monolith decomposition patterns topic and, more explicitly, explained how to decompose а monolith and move towards a microservice architecture. As Vasil explained: "Micro-services have become a trend for the past few years, and they started being adopted by a lot of teams and in a lot of projects. A lot of people try to do them: some succeed… for others I don't think things ended up very well. And besides that, microservices look great on your CV." Agenda of the Tech savvy talk vol.1: What is monolith? What are the pros and cons of monolithic architecture? What is microservice architecture? What are the pros and cons of it? Rules & guidelines for use Patterns & decompose - how to integrate them? Accessing the data About the Monolith? From an architecture point of view, what we have is a code that resides in a single repository for a single code base, and all of the code gets compiled and packaged as a single deployment unit. That deployment unit runs within a single process. From a database perspective, we have one database, where all the data is persistent, and each part of the monolith directly accesses it. About the Microservice architecture It’s a type of architecture where the system is composed of many independently deployable small services where each service runs within its process. All those services communicate with each other over the network using a well-defined interface and protocols like HTTP and REST, enabling them to be loosely coupled. Rules & guidelines for use Model around business domain Group logic business capabilities Single responsibility No dependencies requiring to deploy multiple services at once Loose coupling and evolve independently Accessing the data Most of the time, microservices will need some data to perform their actions. The question is how to get that data. We have 2 options: Use shared database Database per service Sum up Be aware of your real problems Weight carefully the pros and cons Make sure the price paid is worth it If we’ve got your interest, make sure to watch the first edition of the Tech savvy talks here, and you’ll find a lot of details about the Monolith decomposition patterns. Don’t forget to sign up for the following events: Scalefocus Events | Eventbrite And to spice things up - it’s worth it not only for the exchange of expertise but also for a few other tasty surprises. We can’t wait to see you.

  • Scalefocus launches an initiative in support of men’s health, part of Movember

For a third consecutive year the software company organizes the initiative IT Beards, through which it supports the prevention and fight against some of the most severe men’s diseases In the month, devoted on men’s health, prevention and fight against prostate cancer, Scalefocus launches the initiative IT Beards as part of Movember. The campaign is organized for a third year in a row. During the month of November, Scalefocus employees grow their beards and moustaches, take photos of them and publish them on a platform, developed specially for the campaign, which is open for voting. Each of the participants raises funds by receiving votes for his special vision. Due to the high interest in the campaign, this year once again it is open for public voting, which is an opportunity for generating additional funds and visibility for the problems with men’s health. The funds which will be raised by Scalefocus will be donated for conduction of free of charge prophylactic health checks and diagnostics for prostate cancer, targeted at men in risk ages. The health checks will be conducted in December in Sofia, at the Clinic of Urology at Acibadem City Clinic Tokuda Hospital, led by Prof. Kaloyan Davidov. He and his team actively support the cause and work to raise the awareness about it among men at risk ages in order to increase the levels of prevention. ‘At all times and in all forms, we need to talk about the possibility for men to get diseased. The prostate cancer is not something to be afraid of, if diagnosed timely. We can cure the prostate cancer. In the last years, not only in Europe but also in Bulgaria, the number of men who have completely recovered from this type of cancer has been rising.’, shares Prof. Davidov, Acibadem City Clinic Tokuda Hospital, in a conversation about the importance of conducting regular prophylactic medical checks. The funds raised through the campaign will be realized in partnership with Acibadem City Clinic Tokuda Hospital and the CancerCare.bg foundation. The prostate cancer is a significant and long-term health problem in Europe. At present over 400,000 people get sick annually on the Old Continent. According to the National Cancer Register in Bulgaria, in 2016 were registered 2,483 new cases of prostate cancer. This marks an increase of 60% for the past almost 10 years. Every year, the prostate cancer is among the main causes for men’s death. Statistics shows that every year over 1 million men worldwide receive this diagnosis, which represents 8% of all newly registered oncological diseases. During the month of November, we are growing beards to raise the prevention against prostate cancer. You can take part in the initiative here.

  • Georgi, a Technology Team Lead, Animal Admirer and a True Extrovert

On his background TLDR: Born in a town on the Danube, raised on the Black Sea Coast, I am a citizen of the World. Yes - Being around water is the backbone of my story. I have changed 3 schools (not my fault) to land at the Mathematics High School in Burgas. Math has been a loyal companion my whole life. Then I continued with studying Maths and Informatics at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. “Artificial Intelligence” followed afterwards. I have a HUGE family and being around 20 people for the holidays was always the bare minimum. I just cannot be alone. And I do love parties. Friends, family, strangers... It is not important if it is social. On his role at Scalefocus Currently, I am a TTL of the Burgas PHP Team – which is a small group of diverse individuals. Honestly, they are great and help me do my work without doubt and aggravations. I like to think of myself as a constant learner and try to share that spirit with them. And miraculously, it works! I strive to be the best at anything I do. What I strive for is to lead by example, trying to keep the hype alive. On his team I am lucky to have all kinds of experience in my team. From interns to senior developers, all of them have their personalities to add to the mix. But what I am proud of is not just their professionalism, rather than their caring attitude. They always look after each other, always ready to succour (I’ve just learned an unusual word by writing this text) personally and professionally. Bonus points – they are fun at parties! On his everyday work life It is... unstructured, full of tasks to solve, and involves a lot of reading. It starts at a different time every day, and it finishes... when it finishes. Still, I always try to put some order in by doing management first and operational work second. I try to respond in a timely fashion to all important messages, although I fail at times. Then comes the coding, and at that point, people usually wait for my response a bit longer... Sorry. On dealing with doubt Doubt in work – always analyze and try to be objective. Then ask the team for an opinion. Then weigh the facts. Doubt in life – I ask my bride; she knows everything! See ... No doubt. Plus, I already told you about my midnight dog walks, they are a natural doubt reliever for free. On what’s the most important since you started at Scalefocus I've joined Scalefocus primary because I missed working in an office – I was a home office freelancer and/or employee for quite sometime before that. Then the pandemic strikes and back home... But at Scalefocus, I managed to work on diverse technology-agnostic projects, which kept me in good form. I am most proud of my work for the SoFit project, where I wrote the algorithm (and all the maths behind it) for movement detections and templating in 3D space. It was my piece of art at that moment, and I plan to expand on that at some point. Yes, teamwork is important, but sometimes little personal achievements keep the spark burning – this was my spark. On music, hobbies, family, pets, and everything in between I like screaming guitars, accompanied by goose bumping drums and deep bass. Rock, Hard Rock, Metal, Trash – you name it. And add a pinch of old school hip-hop. Call me a musical crossbreed, as I love Bulgarian Folk Music also. In fact, I’ve been Folk dancing for the last 6-7 years. In the school time, I was also an athlete – running with hurdles and a sprinter. At some point, I was close to being part of the national team. Pets? Oh, welcome to the zoo – We have 2 water turtles, 2 parrots, a big dog, and recently I caught a Balkan Gecko, which we have currently in a big aquarium. On his life outside of work I love social events, and the last pandemic was really a hard hit to that part of my free time. Aside from socializing, I am just an ordinary person riding bikes, enjoying trips to nearby and remote places. I love learning interesting facts about diverse cultures. I also enjoy playing computer games and board games. My family has a small villa outside of town, and I like to help with the work there, although I do not do it very often. On the best advice for new software specialists LEARN! CONSTANTLY AND ALWAYS! And do not be afraid to fail. Failure is a teacher. The faster you fail, the quicker you learn. Be Technology agnostic – there is no single tool to solve all problems. Then Learn again. AND ASK QUESTIONS! Nobody was born with knowledge.

  • Top 4 Reasons to Implement RPA

According to a recent Gartner survey, by 2022 90% of companies will have started implementing RPA. So why is an increasing number of businesses relying on the technology and should this be your next step towards accelerating your business growth? There are many benefits to consider and we’ve selected the top ones for you. More time for businesses to focus on expansion Can you imagine saving your finance department 25,000 hours of avoidable work? Gartner reports that it is possible to save this amount of time with RPA, while also saving $878,000 a year. Of course, you will need to select the right processes to automate in the first place. As a start, you need to get a buy-in from your internal stakeholders. To that end, work with them and identify the main pain points each department has and create an initial RPA action plan of no more than 7-10 steps to address them. Fast and long-term results on ROI Depending on the scale, complexity and exceptions of the process, your business should see a return on investment in 6 to 9 months after the RPA implementation. On the one hand, the time you free from manual processes is expected to have a direct positive impact on revenue. On the other hand, it will allow employees to adopt a more logical and strategic mindset. This is a valuable long-term benefit since managers can focus on building the skillset of their teams instead of hiring new people to get repetitive, mundane tasks done. Easy, seamless integrations One of the best things about RPA are its limitless customizations and the ability to be implemented for various solutions and technologies, such as document automation and invoice capture. Business Process Management (BPM) is another great example. While BPM is used for optimizing processes, paired with RPA it can fully automate them. It also allows for connecting legacy and new systems. Building internal trust Once employees realize that RPA does not pose a threat to their jobs but instead is likely to make them more enjoyable, they can reach their full professional potential by focusing on exciting new projects and developing new skills. RPA also boosts cross-team collaboration by stimulating teams to share ideas and best practices about optimizing processes. At the end of the day, RPA sparks discussions about the best ways to prioritize the unique demands from each department and this is a real game changer. • How Eastern Europe Excels in RPA Technology

The only constant in life is change. And this couldn't be truer for the IT community in Eastern Europe. Powered by a professional work ethic and the motivation to excel, the region’s IT sector is experiencing a boom of qualified specialists eager to solve the challenges of tomorrow. RPA is one of the technologies which is gaining traction in transforming businesses by automating processes and eliminating repetitive, redundant tasks to save valuable resources. So let’s see what places Eastern Europe at an advantage in advancing RPA technology, and why more companies are choosing to invest in the region. Location. Location. Location. Serving as a gateway for Asia and the Middle East, Eastern Europe exists as a melting pot of different cultures, influences, and ideas. It is known for its turbulent history and dynamic social environment. The people’s fervent hope for betterment and actionable mindset have allowed the region to overcome many business challenges and rise up strong. In the last decades, Eastern Europe transitioned from the confines of socialism towards open and accessible markets, welcoming in economic and political liberalization processes. This background knowledge is necessary for understanding the region’s present favorable economic state. Meet the Locals The region's ever-changing landscape makes most countries highly adaptable and creative in pioneering new ways to outperform the competition. Despite a declining population, and the region's workforce being tested on every industry level, other regions like South and Southeast Asia can't compare with what Eastern Europe can bring in quality and skill. Innovate, Transform, Accelerate The pandemic and its consequences are complex for everyone, and the IT industry is no exception. It received some of the milder effects during and after the Covid-19 first arrival and peak but managed to adapt as fast as few other sectors. In a matter of days, they went from office workplace to work from everywhere solutions throughout every company department. These quick decisions immediately impacted and even improved the performance, timely delivery, and overall client satisfaction for many companies. An essential part of the outcome is based on integrating Robotic Process Automation (RPA): a licensed software tool to integrate any application via user interface to automate routine, predictable tasks using structured digital data. These products save time and eliminate human employees' need to conduct time-consuming, repetitive, and tedious tasks. Robots are means to secure business continuity for companies in times of pandemic when humans are exposed to restrictions outside of their control. Using such tools in automating routine tasks increases the company's predictability, ensuring that a certain task should and will be delivered on time and within the budget. RPA solutions provide development environments which are usually codeless, drag-and-drop systems, so they are accessible enough that non-developers can build necessary processes. As an alternative method of making workflows manually, many tools also provide the ability to record actions performed by a human within a software tool that can translate into workflows within the RPA product. The virtual agents perform actions following these workflows both with and without human supervision or intervention. It is common for RPA solutions to bring key business drivers as  business growth and resilience and operational efficiency to new heights. RPA allows an organization to take complete control over tasks it would have once outsourced. This is ideal for peace of mind as it ensures full oversight of how your data is used and processed. It also has the added benefits of reduced costs and scalability. The second point is particularly important as it’s what allows RPA to move from one task to the next seamlessly. Rather than having to find half a dozen different humans with overlapping skills, you can now outsource everything to one system. It also keeps your overheads lean as you can cost up your projects on an as-needed basis without having to retain staff. You can implement RPA software in any facet of an organization where manual processes are in place but are most commonly used in finance and operations, sales, and supply chain departments. The New Normal The pre-Covid stats say that 8% of the businesses have started to use automation extensively (i.e., more than 50 instances), which is double the percentage from the year before. It's 2021 now, and these solutions have become the bread and butter of many companies that seek optimization of their processes. Therefore everything that includes deploying bots into third-party applications to automate employees' tasks, both with and without human intervention, is becoming the gold standard for numerous companies. Because of its easily noticeable financial benefits (i.e., cost reductions and productivity boosts) and the more intricate, qualitative ones like employees' increased job satisfaction, robotic process automation has become the perfect illustration of disruptive technology. Last but not least, guidance from subject matter experts throughout the way increases the likelihood of profitable outcomes. So plan wisely and realistically, testing thoroughly, maintaining a good pace, involving all the right people in the project are some of the recommended ways to go with RPA. A Kind Reminder Our take-home message is that neither past failures nor the anticipation of future ones should hinder your progress towards automation gains. It is crucial to keep your feet on the ground and acknowledge that, as is usually the case with innovative technologies, implementing RPA can be rather challenging. And yet, this sounds like nothing new for Eastern Europe. Companies like Scalefocus in Bulgaria and others in the region are implementing and growing their work with this technology, reaching new client satisfaction levels and a reputation as brave innovators. We can honestly say that if the area had a motto, it would probably be "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst, and do the impossible in the meantime." So bring it on. Scalefocus can help you build, support, and expand your business as an experienced RPA partner, guiding you throughout the entire journey. Contact us to learn how.

  • Telco in 2021: From Transformation to Triumph

On April 27, 2021 Scalefocus hosted the webinar, Telco in 2021: From Transformation to Triumph, focusing on how to gain an advantаge over the competition in data segmentation, efficiency and operational costs, and expanding R&D capabilities in the telecom industry. In the panel discussion, Scalefocus teamed up to hear from the experts in the field. The panel included Spas Velinov, Chief Technology Officer at Telenor, Stanislav Georgiev, Chief Executive Offer at Bulsatcom, Vlad Patenko, Google Cloud Customer Engineer, and Rosen Tonchev, IT Director at Vivacom. Covid’s Effects on Data Usage and Entertainment We’re currently witnessing an increase in various tools and technologies being implemented, that are helping us adapt to the work from home environment. For mobile network providers, ensuring constant connectivity at high speeds, while tailoring their services to respond to the unique needs of customers is the strongest effort being made. Spas comments, on the rising data usage: “Throughout the Covid pandemic, we have seen a big increase and change in the traffic demand, as well as a change in our customers’ behavior. We were joking before the start of the meeting, about the best tool to use for such an event. The webinar we’re in right now is being hosted on Zoom, but I can share, that for any Voice Over IP platforms, which we can support with our data network, we hit an increase, which was three times more, compared to the usual data traffic increase. And for Zoom and Teams, it was 15 times greater.” In terms of entertainment, according to Stanislav, not much has changed since the pandemic. And it seems reasonably easy to agree, that people will always seek entertainment in its various forms. What has increased, is the amount of hours families typically sit in front of their TV sets. In Bulgaria, that figure jumped from three hours pre-Covid, to around six hours per day. Stanislav adds: “We also did a little bit of surveys in summer, when we were building our new strategies as an entertainment company, and one of the very interesting findings was that households actually consider TV a crucial service and they have redundancies. So practically, more than 60% of the households that we interviewed said that they are either having or considering a redundant service.” Meanwhile, Vlad comments that his team at Google was fully prepared for the rise in traffic brought by Covid. Much of Google’s staff have chosen to work from home using Google Workplace and Google Meet to communicate and collaborate. Vlad notices a trend of customers who are making the switch to use these same technologies, with an increase of 10 times the traffic compared to what the company has seen last year. Challenges in Managing Data Understanding which data can be used and in what ways, is one challenge which Rosen admits is still relevant for telecom companies. There are various regulations, such as GDPR, which ensure the privacy rights of users, and reminds us that the law must be respected and followed. The next challenge comes in, when deciding on what to actually do with the data. How can data be transformed into something useful, to help make more informed decisions that eventually lead to greater monetization? At Vivacom, Rosen explains that for them, this means conducting deep and accurate analysis, data transformation and investing time and money in data processing. He comments: "At the end of the day we're a revenue focused company, so the way we manage data, should lead to increase in the revenue. The point here is to define, to find the appropriate data that is needed from the whole amount of data and let's say, to focus only on it in order to make it revenue." Spas shares, that at Telecom, once the data passes the GDPR stage, they try to focus on creating an effective model that will unlock new opportunities that extend cash, whether alone or through partnerships. Achieving Efficiency through Chatbots and AI Are chatbots and AI tools effective in optimizing efficiency and decreasing costs, and do they give companies a competitive advantage? Well, there seems to be some divided opinion on that. Here’s what Vlad had to say: “I don’t know any company that isn’t trying to invest and isn’t trying to build a solution like a payment chatbot or voice bot. What we see at Google, from different research, is that people like it. More than 60% of subscribers prefer to interact with self-management channels for communication and more than 70% like personalized communication.” In contrast, many of Vivacom’s customers, as Rosen points out, actually prefer talking to and receiving assistance from real people. Logically, the company automates processes that target specifically a smaller group of customers who are more technologically keen and prefer being served automatically. Rosen adds: “Replacing the personal communication with chatbots is a way to reduce the CapEx and OpEx, but at the end of the day, it turns out that for our customer, the personal communication is very important. And this is one of the reasons why we do not push in that direction that much.” R&D and The Future of 5G Although a complex and fast-developing network that has already gained a lot of buzz, 5G still remains a positive step for the future of telecom. All of our panelists agree on that, with Stanislav sharing a personal experience in which he was a part of the first live broadcast of 5G in Tokyo, describing it as amazing. The great thing about the new network as Stanislav points out, is that the broadcast of a live event through 5G will significantly bring down the costs of equipment and its transportation to the events – with everything necessary just fitting into a backpack. Meanwhile, Spas is a bit skeptical on when exactly the major rollout of 5G services will arrive – “perhaps it will take some time”, as he shares, yet he is eager to see the benefits the network will bring to healthcare companies and the general improvement to society. To gain further insight into the discussion and listen in on the Q&A session of the event, check out the recording of the live webinar here.
